Conserve Your Energy

Be the first person to recommend this.
Energy costs can be variable and developing a program to control — or even better, reduce — energy costs should be welcome by the key decision-makers in any organization. Facility managers (FMs) need to understand the best way to present such a proposal to management. PRSM’s new white paper outlines those steps in a clear and concise fashion.   The first step involves understanding the perspective of the decision-maker. While an FM might have spent a great deal of time researching and refining a new energy proposal, this effort might not be top of mind for the decision-maker. Knowing this will help you understand why it might take some time for the decision-maker ...

Golden Rule

By Sheryl S. Jackson   There is no such thing as a crystal ball that can prepare retail facilities managers for the future, but FMs can look to California for a preview of what might happen in building energy efficiency requirements.   The state’s Title 24 energy standards were enacted in 1978 and are updated every three years to reflect new energy efficient technologies and construction methods. All new construction of, and additions and alterations to, residential and nonresidential buildings are covered except hospitals, nursing homes, correctional centers, jails and prisons.   “There are three areas of the Title 24 standards that affect retail ...

PRSM spoke with Lou DiDomenico, Director of Program Management at Ferrandino & Son, Inc., and Master Plumber Joe Smedley, the company’s Senior Project Manager, Plumbing Division , to help explain some of the basics. Here are some tips on how to properly vet and choose a great commercial plumber.   Check their website As the search for a plumber begins, Smedley suggests eliminating any who do not have a website. “And while reviewing the website, do some investigative work,” he said. “Check to ensure the plumbers are properly licensed and insured. Look for pictures of their trucks or crews. Make sure they have referrals or testimonials. How long ...

Mad About Mixed-Use

Mixed-use developments are a new take on an age-old idea   By Matt Alderton In New York City, dreams really do come true. Not only for aspiring actors, chefs, models and musicians, but also for ambitious real estate developers. Since at least 1956, they’ve been angling to develop Hudson Yards, a blighted area on the West Side of Manhattan whose location on the banks of the Hudson River makes it the ideal canvas for a real estate renaissance. For more than half a century, developers tried to replace the rusty rail yards, for which Hudson Yards was known, with shiny new skyscrapers. And for more than half a century, they failed. Their fortunes ...

Canadian Conferences Challenge PRSM Members to Get Comfortably Uncomfortable We’ve all read the headlines and heard the news—brick-and-mortar retail is not the same industry it was 10 years ago, five years ago, one year ago, or even last week. Retail is growing, evolving and delivering new challenges for FMs faster than ever. Just like the U.S., Canada faces its own set of retail issues, which were addressed during PRSM’s Canada West and East conferences in Vancouver, October 18 and Toronto, October 25. “The Canadian conferences were a huge success,” said Bill Yanek, PRSM CEO. “It was great to see our Canadian retailer and supplier companies come together ...

Good floor mats serve multiple needs   Each of us probably crosses at least one of these every day. Floor mats are a familiar sight at entrances to retail and commercial spaces. But who thinks about them? Daniel Silver, VP Product Development at New Pig Corp, a Tipton, Pennsylvania-based leak-and-spill-management company, and his team do. “We are big mat nerds here,” he said.   Floor mats serve a few important purposes, the first two being safety and cleanliness. Water, snow and ice tracked in on the average hard surface presents a huge risk of slip-and-fall injury. “American businesses pay $11 billion in direct costs for slips, trips and falls, ...

Going Green

If you haven’t switched to green cleaning products, here are five reasons why you should   By: Mary Lou Jay     1. It’s affordable. The price of green products has deterred many facility managers from adopting them. But choosing the lowest cost option doesn’t always get the best results.   “Green products are slightly higher in price due to the advanced technology, such as, HEPA filtration and microfiber product development,” said Glenn McCourt, President, National Janitorial Solutions. “However, in the long run, there is less maintenance required in many cases.” Green technology includes new pads that allow floor technicians to perform wet-work ...

Walmart plans to deploy almost 400 robotic cleaners   By: Sheryl S. Jackson   Emma is not your typical Walmart associate. The only thing Emma requires is another associate to confirm the route to take while scrubbing the floors and normal maintenance required for most floor scrubbers. Maintenance, you ask? Retailers look for clever ways to keep stores clean—and save money   By: Mary Lou Jay   Clean stores are essential to bringing in business. In a survey from ISSA — The Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association — 95 percent of shoppers reported unclean restrooms, unpleasant odors, dirty floors, spills, stains and dirty shopping carts would influence their shopping decisions. But tight budgets have made it difficult for retail facility managers to maintain their stores’ customary cleaning routines. At the same time, their cleaning vendors are experiencing staffing problems. With a booming economy and low unemployment rate, many potential cleaners have moved ...

As a facilities management professional, you are responsible for a vast array of facilities issues. As you look around, it makes sense to question why a pond was built behind the property, why some metal doors are on the surface of the parking lot or why the city has sent a letter regarding stormwater. Chances are your property has one or more types of stormwater controls. Speaking the language. Until recently, stormwater systems were called “Stormwater BMPs” aka Stormwater Best Management Practices. Today, however, they’re commonly referred to as “SCMs” or Stormwater Control Measures. What are SCMs? When natural woodland areas are removed, stormwater ...

Upgrading to LEDs in parking lots drives big energy savings Today, most retail facilities managers understand the benefits of indoor LED lights – they use far less electricity than fluorescent bulbs, they don’t produce as much heat, which provides additional energy savings, and their bright, powerful light showcases a retailer’s products. A growing number of FMs have also discovered it pays to think outside the box regarding LED lights. Using LEDs to illuminate parking lots can lead to substantial energy savings, reduced maintenance costs and enhanced security for customers and employees.   The results from the Lighting Energy Efficiency in Parking ...

Create visually appealing outdoor areas without breaking the bank “Don’t judge a  book by its cover.”  When it comes to retail, the vast majority of shoppers ignore this old adage. Ninety-five percent of consumers said a store’s external appearance influences their decision on where to shop, according to an Omnibus survey. In other words, curb appeal is key to a retailer’s success. “There is a saying in the retail industry that ‘your store is your brand,’ meaning the condition of the physical environment of a retail location delivers a strong brand message to the consumer,” said Mike Popadak Co-Founder & CEO of iVueit, a site auditing platform ...
